What is the best home gym floor?

So you’ve decided to set up your home gym (well done, great move!). You’ve bought your bench, weights and squat rack. You think you’re done, then you realise without some decent home gym floor mats your new gym is gonna ruin your garage floor! But what is the best home gym floor?

In this article I’ll be going through what is the best home gym floor, why, and where you can buy your home gym floor mats. Skip to the end for my home gym floor recommendation.

What is home gym flooring

Home gym floor mats are a kind of mat that when you slot the pieces together creates a piece of flooring however large you need.

Two pieces of a puzzle fitting together

Kind of like a puzzle

You then put your (sometimes heavy) gym equipment on the mats and it stops your garage/shed/spare room floor from getting ruined when you’re using the weights.

Why do I need home gym floor mats?

There are two main reasons you need the best home gym floor:

  1. To protect your floor
  2. To protect your equipment
  3. Comfort
  4. Keeps your neighbours happy

Protecting your floor – This one is pretty straight forward, as you go up in weight and you’re lifting heavier it’s a lot you’ll be putting on your floor. The gym flooring will stop your actual flooring from getting dented, scuffed, and scratched.

Protecting your equipment – Imagine dropping a 10kg weight plate on a concrete floor?? Neither the plate or the floor are gonna come off ok! And weight plates aren’t cheap, having a thick, soft floor will stop your plates getting damaged if you drop them.

Comfort – After my weight training sessions I’ll often do some ab work on the floor. My garage floor is pure concrete so would kill my back to do sit ups on and I don’t want to keep putting a mat down especially for it. So having the gym floor is perfect because it’s comfortable and soft enough that I can do my ab work on it.

Keeping your neighbours happy – I’m often weight training early in the morning when my neighbours are still asleep. Having the flooring makes it much quieter. A barbell banging on concrete can make quite the “clanging” noise!

And the best home gym floor is…….very thick!

When I was looking to buy my home gym floor I found quite a few were only about 1cm thick, to me that wouldn’t be thick enough to fully protect my floor and equipment or make my ab work comfortable. I knew I wanted thicker. I’d pay slightly more for it but I was happy to do that for the extra protection and comfort. This is the one I picked, you can buy it on Amazon here:

In my opinion this is the best home gym floor because:

  • Thickness – At 2cm it’s almost double that of the other gym mats I found.
  • Easy to put together – The pieces slot together then an outside piece goes around the edge to make it neat and tidy.
  • Waterproof – If I spill anything on it like my water bottle or smoothie I can just wipe it clean so it stays looking good.
  • Value – It was a good price considering it was twice as thick as the others I looked at and it certainly was not twice as expensive!

In conclusion

If you’re installing a home gym then decent flooring is a must. It’ll give you piece of mind that everything (you, your floor, your expensive equipment) is protected as well as keeping your neighbours happy.

It also just makes your gym look better, why spend hundreds on all that equipment but not pay a little bit extra to really get your home gym looking complete? Definitely a no brainer.

    Hi Katie,

I initially wasn’t going to spend a dime on a decent floor. But after reading your post I must say you’re right. I have spent quite a lot building my home gym. After all this money I have spent, a good floor is just a little so now it’s a no brainer for me. Thanks for this approach on your post.

Hi Paolo I’m so glad I’ve convinced you! You really will save money in the long run by not paying out for repairs to your floor or buying replacement equipment.

      All the best

Wow! Quite a much detailed overview here. I didnt really think about this at all before when I started building up my mini gym at home. However, someone suggested I paid more attention to flooring and that was the reason I searched for this here. Quite a great one to see in all. Thank you so much for sharing this post here

I’ve never even considered flooring when I think about home gyms. I’m usually so concerned with the equipment, and if it’s going to fit through the doorway. The wrong flooring could ruin everything and I hadn’t even thought of it. Thanks for the info and great suggestions. This was helpful.
